What does happen, reliably, is that winter finds the weak points. Wet ground, low usage, exposed components, and the specific decisions people make around a cold snap all combine to produce a predictable set of problems.
The real winter problem is water, not cold
A Tennessee winter is wet. The water table rises, the ground stays saturated for weeks, and a drain field sitting in soil that is already full cannot accept effluent regardless of its condition.
That produces the classic seasonal pattern: a system that works perfectly through September and backs up in February. Homeowners reasonably conclude the field has failed. Often it has not.
The other winter water problem is groundwater entering the tank through cracks below the liquid line or a failed lid seal. That fills the tank independently of anything the household does — the tank refills on its own after pumping. It is a repair, not a replacement, and it is one of the most satisfying diagnoses we make.
What actually can freeze
- The line between house and tank, if it is shallow and the house is unoccupied — low flow means nothing warm moving through it
- A pump tank or control panel in an exposed location, particularly on advanced systems
- The riser and lid area if a riser is not sealed properly and cold air reaches the tank surface
- Shallow field lines under bare, compacted ground with no snow or vegetation cover
- Anything in an unheated pump house on a well-and-septic property
The common thread is exposure plus low use. A fully occupied house sending warm water through the system several times a day is remarkably resistant to freezing.
Before winter
- 1Pump the tank if it is due or close to due. Do it in autumn while the ground is firm.
- 2Clean the effluent filter — a blocked filter plus reduced winter capacity is how backups happen.
- 3Fix any leaking fixture. A running toilet sends hundreds of gallons a day into a field that is already struggling with a high water table.
- 4Check that downspouts and driveway runoff shed away from the field rather than across it.
- 5Leave grass over the field rather than cutting it very short — vegetation cover insulates.
- 6Never compact the ground over field lines. Bare, driven-on soil freezes far deeper than covered ground.
If the property will be empty
Vacant houses are where septic freezing actually happens, because nothing warm is moving through the system.

What not to do
- Do not add antifreeze to a septic tank. It kills the bacterial population the system depends on.
- Do not run water continuously to prevent freezing. You will overload a field that is already saturated.
- Do not pump the tank while the ground is flooded — an empty tank in saturated soil can float or be crushed.
- Do not drive a truck across a soft field to reach the tank. Compaction damage lasts far longer than the freeze would have.
- Do not ignore an alarm on a pump system. In winter it means the same thing it always means, with less margin.

Reduce water use immediately and call. Backups in winter are usually saturation or groundwater rather than genuine field failure, and both are far cheaper conversations than the one you are dreading.
