Coffee grounds and eggshells form a sludge that packs the trap downstream. Grease coats the chamber and then the pipe.
And the genuinely destructive one: silverware. A teaspoon that goes in unnoticed will bend impellers and score the grind ring, and the unit is usually finished.
Running habits matter too. Cold water while grinding, and keep it running for fifteen seconds after the noise clears so the waste actually leaves the trap rather than settling in it.
