Jetting versus cabling: the honest comparison
A drain cable is a flexible steel snake with a head on the end. It is excellent at one thing: physically breaking through or retrieving a specific obstruction. It is fast, it is inexpensive, and for a first-time clog it is usually all you need.
A jetter uses water at high pressure through a nozzle whose rear-facing jets both propel the hose and scour the pipe. Instead of making a passage through the blockage, it removes material from the entire circumference of the pipe. That is why a jetted line stays clear for years while a cabled line can close back up in months.
The trade-offs are real. Jetting costs more, takes longer, and requires a pipe in sound structural condition. On a line that already has cracks, offsets, or Orangeburg pipe that has lost its shape, high pressure can turn a marginal pipe into a failed one — which is exactly why we camera first when there is any doubt.
Our rule of thumb: cable a first-time clog, jet a repeat, and always camera before jetting a main line in a house built before about 1970.
Jetting on septic properties
If your home is on septic, jetting the line between the house and the tank is fine and often needed. What matters is where the material goes. A jetter moves everything downstream, and downstream is your tank.
For that reason we usually recommend combining a jetting job with a tank pump-out if the tank is anywhere near due. You get a clean line and a clean tank in one visit, and the solids we just flushed do not sit in the tank waiting to head for the drain field.
We never jet a drain field line at high pressure without a specific reason and the right equipment — field lines are perforated and fragile, and treating them like a sewer main is how a repairable field becomes a replacement.
