Buying your own fixtures — what to check
Plenty of customers buy their own, and that is fine. Three things save a lot of frustration.
First, check hole spacing and count. A single-hole faucet will not cover a three-hole sink without a deck plate, and a widespread set will not fit a centerset drilling. Second, check parts availability — some inexpensive online fixtures have no replaceable cartridge, so a seven-dollar wear part becomes a full replacement. Third, check the finish is actually what the rest of the room uses; brushed nickel and stainless are not the same color in daylight.

Hard water and why fixtures fail early here
The mineral content in area water leaves deposits on every wetted surface. Aerators clog and cut flow to a trickle. Showerheads spray sideways because half the ports are blocked. Cartridges and valve seats wear faster because the water is effectively slightly abrasive.
Most of that is maintenance, not repair. Aerators unscrew and soak clean in vinegar. Showerheads do the same. Doing every aerator and showerhead in the house in one afternoon noticeably improves the place, and it costs nothing.
Where it becomes a real expense is inside the valves. - A cartridge, an aerator, or a supply line is a small job. A full faucet or sink replacement involves the fixture and considerably more labor.
- Number of fixtures
- Four fixtures in one visit costs meaningfully less per fixture than four separate trips. Worth bundling if you have a list.
- What we find behind it
- A seized stop, a corroded stub-out, a rotten cabinet base, or a drain that was never vented properly. Shown to you before we proceed.
- Whether the wall has to be opened
- A shower cartridge is a surface job. A failed valve body behind tile is a different scope, and we will tell you which before starting.
- Who supplies the fixture
- We fit what you bought or supply it ourselves. We can warrant our labor either way, but only warrant a fixture we supplied.
- Access
- An open under-sink cabinet is quick. A pedestal sink, a tight vanity, or a wall-hung basin takes longer for the same result.
