Baffles are the least-known components in a septic tank and among the most consequential. They are simple — a tee or a wall of concrete at the inlet and outlet — and they do the work that makes a septic tank a septic tank rather than a holding pit.
The inlet baffle directs incoming flow downward so it does not stir up the settled layers. The outlet baffle draws liquid from the middle of the tank, below the scum and above the sludge, so what leaves is the clearest water available.

The failure with no symptom
Most septic problems announce themselves. A full tank slows the drains. A failing field surfaces effluent. A blocked line backs up.
A failed outlet baffle does none of that. The tank keeps working, the house drains normally, and nothing about daily life changes. What changes is what leaves the tank: instead of relatively clear liquid drawn from the middle, the outlet now passes scum from the top and solids from the bottom, straight into the drain field.

If your tank was installed in roughly the last twenty years it probably has an effluent filter sitting in the outlet tee. It is a cartridge that catches solids the tank did not settle, and it is genuinely effective at protecting a drain field.
It is also designed to be pulled out and rinsed. Annually. Not eventually.
The number of filters we pull that have obviously never been touched is remarkable, and the outcome is predictable: the filter blocks completely, the outlet stops passing liquid, and the house backs up. The homeowner concludes the septic system has failed and starts pricing replacements.
